As a pro volleyball player, my game day routine helps me dominate on the court and play more consistently during the season. This is something I have experimented with throughout my volleyball career to find what works for me to prepare me mentally, physically and emotionally, to perform at my best at a high level. Now I have a set routine that helps me be in the zone, confident, focused and energised. Here are the steps I take to be ready for a home game.

Pre-Game Day

My game routine starts the night before the game. After practice I like to go home, shower, eat dinner and watch a movie (something light and funny), a volleyball match or read. After dinner, I prep for the next day, pack my bag for morning practice, and set out my clothes for morning practice and games. I basically plan out every step of my day at night. I started doing this because one time my alarm didn't go off and I was mad late for practice. It was a stressful morning and I don't want to repeat it. After all my next day's prep is done it's time for some recovery with my massage gun or foam roller then I do some light stretching. I do my night routine right before bed then I journal to clear my mind, read my Bible, pray and off to sleep.

Game Day

It's Game Day. Wake up and thank God (Psalm 100:4) on my lips. Drink a huge glass of water and start my morning skincare routine. Because I did everything the night before, I get to enjoy spending quiet time with God in prayer. I like to say my affirmations and declarations over my day. Then it's off to practise. After practice, I head home to shower and eat lunch. Take a nap. NAPS is something I LOVE and have done since being on the National Volleyball team of Trinidad and Tobago. It is crucial for me. After a nap it's time to get PUMPED! I turn on my game day playlist and start doing my makeup, get ready.. after I have a banana with peanut butter. Then I pray and journal, take some selfies and it's off to the sports hall.

Everyone's game routine looks different. It's important to find what works best for you. Start by asking yourself "how do you want to feel on game day?" What will help you be at your best at the game? So have some fun while creating your game day routine even if you don't have time to do it all or feel like doing it before the game. It will all work out once you are consistent.
